How to Find a Group to Play Dungeons & Dragons in Oxford

Are you a Dungeons & Dragons player looking for a group, or new to roleplaying in general and eager to give it a go? In this guide, I will share some of my ideas on how to play D&D in Oxford (or any other roleplaying game such as Pathfinder, Star Wars, Call of Cthulu, or Vampire).

How Popular is D&D In Oxford?

Dungeons & Dragons is a popular tabletop role-playing game first published in the 1970s. After going through several editions, D&D has gained a dedicated fan base over the years. Thanks in part to the game being featured in popular culture, such as in TV shows like Stranger Things and The Big Bang Theory, more people have become interested in it. So, it’s no surprise you’ve come to this page where I share my experiences playing Dungeons & Dragons and other roleplaying games in Oxford.

The bottom line is: D&D has a global fan base, with players and groups forming in many countries and cities around the world. Oxford, being such a diverse and international city, is no exception. In fact, it can be easier to find a D&D group here compared to other places.

Things to Consider Before You Join a D&D Game in Oxford

Joining a Dungeons & Dragons game can be an exciting experience, but it’s important to consider a few things before committing to a group. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

  • Time commitment: D&D is a time-consuming game, with a typical session lasting several hours. Before joining a game, make sure you have enough time to commit to regular sessions. Oxford being a university city, you will find many groups just meet once a month or once every couple of months. Whatever the case, make sure you can commit to that frame.
  • Playstyle: D&D can be played in a variety of ways, from combat-heavy campaigns to character-driven role-playing games. Make sure you understand the play style of the group you’re joining and that it aligns with what you enjoy. For example, if you enjoy roleplaying (acting like your character), you should ask whether the other players are comfortable doing this. Or, if you are very shy, you should check if they will expect you to interact in specific ways.
  • Group dynamics: D&D is a collaborative game, and the dynamics of the group can have a big impact on your experience. Consider meeting with the group before committing to a game to see if you feel comfortable with the other players.
  • Experience level: D&D can be complex, and it’s important to consider the experience level of the group you’re joining. If you’re new to the game, you may want to look for a group that is beginner-friendly.
  • Game master style: The game master (GM) plays a crucial role in shaping the game experience. Consider the GM’s play style, storytelling ability, and how they handle conflicts or disagreements.
  • Game setting: D&D games can take place in a variety of settings, from high fantasy worlds to gritty post-apocalyptic landscapes. Consider the game setting and whether it appeals to you.

By considering all of these factors, you will be able to find a D&D game in Oxford that is a good fit for you.

Where and How to Find a D&D Party in Oxford

There are many ways in which you can find other players to play Dungeons & Dragons in Oxford. For example:

  • Go to a games shop: This is one of the easiest ways to find a D&D group fast. Many games shops have dedicated evenings for D&D players. All you need to do is approach the shop and ask!
  • Ask on Reddit: There’s an Oxford subreddit on Reddit. You’ll usually find people asking to join D&D groups there.
  • Join a Meetup group: Although not always around when you do a search, many people create Oxford Meetup groups to start a D&D campaign. These are typically listed under “Games”.
  • Look for listings in ad sites: Some sites, like Gumtree or Daily Info, have ad listings. In rare cases, you might be able to find ads for D&D groups looking for new players. What’s better, you can create your own listing and invite others to join.

D&D Etiquette

Although not rules per se, there’s a general “D&D etiquette” you should follow if you want to have a positive and respectful game in oxford. The rules are quite straightforward:

Respect your fellow players, their characters, and their decisions. Avoid interrupting others, talking over them, or undermining their choices.

Be punctual. Always arrive on time for game sessions, and notify the GM if you can’t make it.

Communicate openly with your fellow players and GM. If you have concerns or suggestions, voice them in a respectful manner.

Don’t be a rules lawyer. While rules are important in D&D, it’s important not to obsess over them to the point of disrupting the flow of the game. Trust the GM to make rulings and be open to compromise.

Avoid metagaming (or using out-of-character knowledge to influence your in-game decisions). Try to always make decisions based on your character’s perspective and knowledge.

Stay engaged in the game, both during your turn and when other players are taking their turns. Avoid distractions and keep the game moving.

Come to game sessions prepared with any materials you need, such as character sheets, dice, and pencils.
