Classical Art and Ancient India

March 21, 2023 @ 10:00 am - March 22, 2023 @ 5:45 pm

Free

World experts come together with a hybrid audience to ask: what was the artistic relationship between ancient India, Greece and Rome?

Generously supported by the Bagri Foundation, and building on the success of our Gandhara Connections project, this workshop launches CARC’s new #AncientArtConnections initiative, looking at relationships between Graeco-Roman art and the wider ancient world.

‘Classical Art and Ancient India’ will take place in Oxford and online via Zoom on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 March 2023. This colloquium will bring together an array of invited international speakers and a worldwide audience to address a topic very closely related to Gandhara and vital for placing classical art in its global context: the question of how much mutual artistic exchange occurred in antiquity between India (especially south India), Greece and Rome, and what we stand to learn by studying their art traditions alongside each other.

The celebrated historian William Dalrymple, whose next book deals with ancient Indian influences, will join via Zoom to deliver a keynote lecture.
